5th grade Math begins with a BIG push to learn your Math Facts by heart!
This does not mean that you can count on your fingers and toes and figure them out, this means you "know" them like you know your own name when asked.
There are many ways to start getting the rust off and getting these facts back in your head like you had them in 4th grade.
Start by:
1) getting on websites and apps that quiz you in a fun way.
2) doing some flash cards or printable timed tests.
3) having family members or friends ASK you your facts out loud, while riding in the car or during commercial breaks.
Note from teacher: (changes and adds to each week)
9/1- This first academic week we will do some work with powers of ten and how multiplying adds a zero, and dividing takes one away
9/9- We have 4 days of xtramath.org practice on addition due from Thursday night to Thursday night each week
This week we begin online homework on GoMath website. 1.2 homework due by Thursday night- class time given on Mon and Wed.
https://youtu.be/dfJbhdZZN2A If you were absent at Open House, or forgot about our Math program features, here it is again.
9/16 We took our first Minor test today, please check ParentVue by tomorrow to see how your child is absorbing our first unit- then use the GoMath site to review and practice for our upcoming Major (by early next week, watch for online practice test coming)
9/23 We are on Lesson 1.7 with 5 lessons left before our Major on Powers of 10. Don't forget that any of our lessons can be accessed online through GOMath and the Student Portal/Highlands/ GoMath Think Central- your child just needs to put in their codes (Google) then look under "My Library" and "Interactive Student G5" before picking the unit and lesson, watch it again and try the red whistle activities at the end of each lesson to see if your child is mastering the content and learning target goal. It is a great program!!!!!!
9/30 Our first Math Major (50%) Will be on Wednesday and kids can choose to take it on the computer or on paper. Practice tests are available on their GoMath Library site, with "check scores" the best way to see what they still need to work on before the test.
10/7 Long Division is upon us- and the hard work of learning Math Facts continues. Funny how knowing multiplication helps you pick the right number in division that goes into another larger number. Keep at it on xtramath.org to get those facts to automatic.
10/18 We are in the middle of the battle of Long Division- and breaking big numbers apart with powers of 10 is a skill that coincides with our first unit that some kids are finding handy. (partial quotients algorithm) Traditional Long Division is also encouraged- along with doing your xtramath.org practice each week to keep those multiples in our mind to help break up those division problems.
10/21 Math Long Division Major on Thursday - look for online practice test after Tuesday- Some kids that are ready can take in Wednesday in the lab- or Thursday on Paper.
10/28 - We begin our new Unit on Decimals as we begin our 2nd quarter together. Money is a good thought for our first unit of adding and subtracting decimals. Keep working on your xtramath.org account 4-7 days a week to get those facts down.
11/4 Today we added decimals, keeping in mind regrouping, tomorrow we subtract- and Wednesday we will have a mid chapter checkpoint to check our progress for our first minor (30% grade) of the new quarter. Keep xtramath.org a priority this week.
11/18- I am thankful for all the kids that have been practicing xtramath.org, that will make our new unit Multiplying Decimals much easier and less stressful for them. Keep checking your child's practice progress by seeing their weekly xtramath grade. 25% a day.
11/25- Tuesday we have a mid chapter check (minor) please look online for any practice you might want to try. Happy Thanksgiving
12/2- We are wrapping up multiplying decimals- Major on Thursday after Lab practice Wed, and review wrong answers Wed night.
12/11 We are on to dividing decimals, which is VERY similar to our prior "Long Division" unit, yet important to keep tabs on that dot.
1/13- FRACTIONS ARE FUN!, but it seems that attitude depends on how well you know multiples, for common denominators. Your hard work on xtramath.org will pay off now as we work hard first adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators by finding their common multiple. We learned a couple methods this past week, I sent an email home with links to help. Let's go!
https://www.worksheetworks.com/pdf/_zt/k7r8/WorksheetWorks_Fraction_Subtraction_1.pdf
1/20The work of fractions continues and we will have a quiz in the lab on Wednesday in the computer lab (paper available) to show what we know about common denominators and factors in adding and subtracting fractions/
1/27 We are working on borrowing in subtracting fractions, which requires a common denominator to be found, then having the whole number "deliver" the fractional part needed as a whole number. Homework Monday is page 393. All homework will be turned in the day after the lesson, no more "I Turned it in already" from your 5th grader, they should have it in their trapper. Check please.
2/12 We are liking doing multiplication of fractions thus far- because the multiple is the common denominator- keep an eye out for homework as we are not turning it in early- kids should have it in their trapper each night to show you what we are doing.
2/17 - Math minor today went pretty well for most kids that did it online, then took it on paper for best grade. I sent home an email today with link to finding simplest form of fractions and a worksheet to also help. We will try to wrap up this unit by the end of week
2/24 Email sent today with Answer Guide for tonight's practice for Multiplying Fractions tomorrow= MAJOR, thanks for helping out!
3/2 We are wrapping up dividing fractions and a pre-test was given- and our test Wednesday was practicing on paper, looking at how we did- then taking a similar version on the computer. M-step is coming, so we need to be comfortable and familiar with testing online. khanacademy.org is a great resource to prepare for the 5th grade M-Step, as they walk the kids through each standard.
3/16- Weird times- stay safe everyone- if bored, I sent a bunch of links on email today and loaded up the kids GOMath account to do some homework assignments AFTER THEY WATCH the lessons in the library section. (See email with reminder YouTube video.) Hope to see you soon! You have GRIT to keep going and practicing on khanacademy.com.
